Social Enterprise: De Rigueur for Nonprofits? Or, Just Another New Idea?
Development. Capacity. Sustainability. Social Enterprise. Each year, there is a buzz around an emerging or new concept aimed at strengthening the ability of charitable nonprofits to support their mission. Professionals in the nonprofit sector tell us that today’s nonprofits are more challenged than ever. We learn that nonprofits suffer poor cash-flow and have used up historical reserves. There is less support from government for social and arts programs at the national, state, and local levels, with a concurrent reduction in giving from businesses and individuals. In theory, as our society grows more complex there is a larger need for the programs and services of nonprofit organizations. The nonprofit blueprint serves as appropriate umbrella to accomplish public good.
