James River Shorts is a festival of short films (30 minutes or less) that best represent the art of film and film as art. It’s also the James River Film Festival’s little sibling. A snapshot of the past 18 years of JRFF guests – Stan Brakhage, Karen Aqua, Charles Burnett, Ray Harryhausen, Martha Colburn, Skip Elsheimer, Albert Maysles, Ken Jacobs, the Brothers Quay, Peggy Ahwesh – shows that the James River Film Society has a broad concept of film. Therefore, we encourage all types of shorts – fiction, nonfiction, animation, and experimental. We define short, you define art.

James River Shorts will be held Nov. 10-12, 2011 at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. The screening of James River Shorts finalists will be held on Friday, November 11 at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Guest filmmaker and film educator Roger Beebe will help make the final decisions about awards (up to $2,000!). In addition, we will present a program of Beebe's work on Thursday, November 10 at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond and, on Saturday (also at VisArts), we will offer a series of hand-processing film workshops (Super 8 and 16mm) during the day, followed by a screening of the work that evening.
