SPACES (Cleveland, OH)

SPACES-5.jpg

SPACES advances the artist's vision. By providing freedom, resources and an audience, SPACES enables artists to engage the public in a vital dialogue about contemporary art. SPACES interacts directly with artists, promoting excellence and experimentation to produce challenging gallery exhibitions, public programs, residencies and publications.

How did your organization start?
As a result of growing frustration concerning a lack of venues for experimental art work, two artists called a gathering of like-minded individuals on May 25, 1978 to discuss their "interest in creating and presenting new art including individual and collaborative works." Since then, SPACES has occupied three separate locations, added a project program (SPACELAb, 1994) and an international artist residency (SWAP, 2002), and continued to grow and thrive on the shores of Lake Erie.

What is special about your organization?
SPACES is the only organization in the region that focuses on experimental contemporary art and the only venue in Northeast Ohio with a regular international artist residency program.

What is your organization currently working on that excites you?
As many artists would say about which of their works is their favorite, "it's the next one." Working with such a diversity of artists and programs allows our content and topics to vary into new, often uncharted, territory. That type of exploration is thrilling to me. I'm also excited to see how we can alter the framework of a 32 year-old non-profit to continue to stay experimental and viable as an institution.

What is the future of your organization? What are you striving for?
I'm still thinking jet-packs and robot maids are in our future...

Aside from that, our future consist of our artists. We put a lot of trust in the artists we select for exhibitions and allow them to direct the course of our programming. SPACES as an institution, of course, is striving to be THE resource and forum for experimental contemporary art practice.

What else do you want the media arts community to know about your organization?
The Midwest is where it's at.
